GUWAHATI, Aug 24: Following the two-day extended steering committee meet of the AGP on August 20 and 21 last, the much-hyped ‘unified AGP’ could be noticed at a hunger strike that was organized in the city today.
At a time when the AGP is being criticized by its grasroots-level workers for losing its regional character, almost all the top leaders of the party could be seen assembling at the Last Gate field to participate in today’s hunger strike. The AGP leaders who participated in the strike included president Chandra Mohan Patowary, working president Phani Bhusan Choudhury, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former Speaker Pulakesh Barua, senior leaders Atul Bora (Sr), Rekha Rani Das Boro, Biraj Kumar Sharma, Prabindra Deka, steering committee members and other important leaders.
The fact that Prafulla Kumar Mahanta had also accompanied party president Chandra Mohan Patowary while addressing the press on the last three occasions has further boosted the morale of party workers. The recent show of unity in the AGP seems to have bothered the Congress because the Chief Minister, during his press conference on August 22, made full use of the opportunity to criticize the AGP.
Today’s hunger strike was called by the AGP in protest against the uncontrolled rise in price of essential commodities and the failure of the government to control the flood and erosion problem of the State.
Talking to mediapersons, Patowary said, “The prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed beyond the reach of the common man. The present government has not been able to control the business community due to which prices of essential goods are skyrocketing. The Food and Civil Supplies Department, which should regulate the hike in prices, has almost become a nonentity.”
On the worsening flood scenario of the State, he said, “During the tripartite talks between the Centre, State government and the AASU on May 5, 2005, it was decided to declare Asom floods as a national problem. However, the Centre has not announced the decision till now and even the State government does not seem to be interested in reminding the Centre of that decision. It is entirely the State government’s failure that relief material is not reaching the displaced flood victims.”
Meanwhile, a section of the AGP leaders, including Chandra Mohan Patowary, Phani Bhushan Choudhury, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Atul Bora (Sr) and several other leaders, will soon visit Dhemaji district, which has been worst hit by the recent floods, to interact with the victims there. THE SENTINEL
