SHILLONG, Aug 26: The Executive Committee (EC) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided that only non-tribal Indians will be allowed to carry business activities in the jurisdiction of the district council.
The decision was taken in the meeting held today at KHADC, where Deputy CEM of KHADC in-charge of the Trade Department Lambor Malngiang said, “Regarding the trade and commerce of the non-tribals in the districts, the EC has decided to accept only those who are citizens of India.”
Malngiang added, “The inspection in the three districts of Khasi Hills that has been going on for two months will be continued.” In the last few weeks, MLA of Pynthorumkhrah constituency AL Hek and MLA of Laban Constituency Sanbor Shullai have urged the District Council to stop harassing the genuine non-tribal people who have been doing business for so many years in and around the constituency.
Regarding the requests made by the two MLAs, the KHADC asked them to submit the lists of the genuine non-tribals dwelling in their constituencies to the district councils for examination.
Malngiang said, “Till now there are about 106 shops belonging to the non-tribals that have been ceased by the district council from the three districts – East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi District.”
KHADC has also decided to undertake a joint inspection with the chief of different Himas to check the forest’s border of the KHADC, so that the private people are not able to claim the forest areas of the district councils.
KHADC announced the opening of office branches of various departments in West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi districts. Malngiang said, “These branches are going to open in order to ease the work of the district councils.”
Malngiang also said KHADC will be inaugurating a memorable statue of the Father of the Autonomous District Councils JJM Nichols Roy in the month of October. THE SENTINEL
