Digboi College launches conservation project

DIGBOI, Aug 24 – Digboi College has launched another project directly related with conservation and environmental protection through initiation of the college Silvi Culture Project in the presence of principal M Bharali Boruah, vice-principal Golap Kalita, Head of Botany Department Dr Tilak Chandra Dutta, several other teachers, a section of the office staff and many students of the college.

Dr Tilak Chandra Dutta started the proceedings of the function by speaking about the urgent necessity of planting of adequate trees with timber value to create a natural reservoir of free oxygen not only for the college community but also for the neighbourhood and generate a source of future wealth for the college as well.

HN Sarma, retired principal of Margherita College and treasurer of the college, attended the function as the chief guest. In his speech, he stated that the younger generation consisting of students must realise the value of trees as life sustaining agents and must work towards protection and extension of the forest cover. He inaugurated the project by planting a Bonsoom sapling.

M Bharali Boruah principal of the college, said that the trees are the natural suppliers of the much needed oxygen. He called upon the students to realise the importance of trees and plant them and nourish them even in their domestic yards so as to create a healthy green cover. Golap Kalita, vice-principal, also spoke a few words on the occasion. MM Choudhury, retired head of the Department of Political Science of the college, also planted a tree sapling. All the teachers, including the principal and the vice-principal as well as employees and students took part in the plantation programme. ASSAM TRIBUNE
