DERGAON, Aug 1 – As many as 20 AASU activists including three girls were injured, three of them seriously when police lathi-charged them in front of the Golaghat Deputy Commissioner’s office today. About 150 student activists gheraoed the DC’s office around 11.30 am today in protest against police raids at the residence of AASU vice-president Jatin Bora and at the office of Golaghat district committee of AASU last evening.
According to information the raids were conducted following a complaint lodged by ASEB that AASU actvists had vandalised the Board office on July 23 in protest against irregular power supply.
The police resisted the protesters, but the latter went ahead with their gherao programme, breaking the barricade. This prompted the police to lathi-charge the agitationists. The seriously injured AASU activists were Paban Saikia, Sanjib Kalita and Pinku Bora and they were admitted to a private nursing home.
It was alleged that the police pounced upon the students in the absence of any magistrate. After the incident the AASU leaders met Deputy Commissioner, HN Borah for a discussion on the matter. The incident has been widely condemned by several organisations. ASSAM TRIBUNE
