GUWAHATI, April 9: With the innovation of new technology, election campaign has undergone transformation to a great extent in India, and poll campaign through SMS is one such development that has made the Election Commission of India do a serious thinking to check its bad effects in so far as election code of conduct is concerned. Poll campaign through SMS is at its peak in the country, but the matter which the Commission is worried about is that this new form of poll campaign goes on unchecked even within the 48-hour no-campaign period before the polling. Though SMS campaign is not vigorous in Asom, the Commission wants to put an end to this trend.
The Assam Election Department today called all mobile phone service providers in Asom and asked them to find ways to prohibit poll campaign through SMS during the 48-hour period when campaign is totally banned. The mobile phone service providers expressed their loss involved in the restriction, but the State Election Department made it a point that at any cost the trend must be stopped.
The State Election Department has also taken stock of areas in the State where there is no telephone network. The department is contemplating on taking the help of the Assam Police Radio Organization (APRO) for telephone network in such areas during the Lok Sabha polls. Election Commissioner Naveen Chawla had assured the State Government of providing satellite phones in such areas in Asom for officials during the polls, but the approval of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is awaited for that to happen. THE SENTINEL
