Single woman candidate in fray for Tripura Lok Sabha polls

AGARTALA, April 6: Altogether 19 candidates, including an only woman candidate, from 11 different parties, have filed nomination papers for the two Lok Sabha seats of Tripura at the end of the date of submission, Additional Chief Electoral officer Dilip Acharjee said here today.He said the papers would be would be put for scrutiny on April 6 in the presence of election observer and last date of withdrawal was fixed as April 8.He added that the Trinamool Congress was the only party in Tripura, which nominated a woman candidate for the election this time.The prominent contestants who submitted nominations were Left Front sitting MPs Bajubon Reang and Khagen Das, Sudip Roy Barman and Dibachandra Hrangkhawal of Congress, Arun Chandra Bhowmik and Rita Debbarma of Trinamool Congress and Nilmoni Deb and Pulin Dewan of the BJP. The Rastriya Dohat Morcha (RDM), for the first time in the political history of the state, has filed nominations from both East Tripura (tribal reserved) and West Tripura parliamentary constituencies.Besides major national and regional parties, three Independent candidates were also in the fray. Acharjee stated that five of the six election observers had already arrived in the state and left for their respective places of posting and there was no allegation from any political party regarding violation of model code of conduct so far.
