Seminar on North East ethnicity


GUWAHATI, April 3 – The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi and Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development here organised a two-day symposium titled, ‘Ethnicity, Region and Nation: India’s North East’ from March 29 at the conference hall of the OKD Institute, Guwahati, said a press note.

Prof Ashok Jain, chairman of OKDISCD, inaugurated the symposia. Prof Javeed Alam, chairman, Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi also addressed the gathering. Prof Mridula Mukherjee, director, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi and Prof Indranee Dutta, director, OKD institute elaborated the objective of the symposia.

In the inaugural session–Historical Background–chaired by Prof David Syiemlieh, Dr Bhashyam Kasturi, NMML and Prof Aditya Mukherjee, director, Jawaharlal Nehru Institute for Advanced Studies, presented their papers.

In the second session–Post-colonial Developments–chaired by Prof Indranee Dutta, various scholars from this region like Prof Jagdish Lal Dawar, Mizoram University, Dr Tana Showren, Rajiv Gandhi University and Dr Dhruba Pratim Sharma, Gauhati University presented their papers.

In the third session. Contemporary Situation and Looking at the Future, chaired by Prof Bhupen Sarmah, E N Rammohan, Subir Bhaumick, Abhijit Choudhury and Dr Rakesh Batabyal presented their papers.

Many scholars from this region participated in this symposia organised by the NMML for the first time in the region. The NMML and OKDISCD have resolved that henceforth they will collaborate on other academic exchange programmes, the release added. ASSAM TRIBUNE
