SHILLONG, April 8 – Congress nominee for Shillong Lok Sabha seat Vincent Pala has emerged as the richest candidate in Meghalaya with assets worth over Rs 24.46 crore, which includes a gold watch costing Rs 12.50 lakh.
He owns plots and buildings worth over Rs 22 crore in all the four Khasi Hills districts. While eight plots are registered in Pala’s name, five are in his wife’s name.
His opponent and Independent candidate Denis Siangshai, also from Pala’s coal-rich home district of Jaintia Hills, has declared assets worth over Rs 6 crore.
Both Pala and Siangshai own licensed arms.
Meghalaya Democratic Party candidate Martle N Mukhim, on the other hand, has assets worth only Rs 85,471.
Out of the seven candidates, only former pastor PBM Basaiawmoit has a criminal case against him. He is alleged to have instigated villagers of Mawpat in 1995 to assault a person, who died later. – PTI
