Guwahati Lok Sabha Election, AUDF, TF factions brighten Bijoya Chakravarty’s prospects

GUWAHATI, April 4: Guwahati LS Congress candidate Robin Bordoloi’s chances of winning this year’s elections have taken a further plunge. The fact that Bordoloi has been using the name of his illustrious father Lokopriyo Gopinath Bordoloi in an effort to gain political mileage has drawn a lot of flak from the public. On the other hand, AUDF too is going all out to defeat the Congress and in the process has brought about a split in the Congress minority vote bank with Sonabor Ali filing his nomination papers on behalf of the AUDF to contest the Guwahati LS seat. It may be mentioned that AUDF is full aware of the fact that aside from the Congress and the BJP, other political parties have do not stand much of a chance in so far as winning the Guwahati seat is concerned.

Significantly, these recent developments authored mainly by the AUDF have vastly improved the prospects of Bijoya Chakravarty, the BJP candidate for the Guwahati seat.

Meanwhile, in what may be termed as another interesting development, Third Front’s (TF) NCP candidate Akshay Rajkhowa has also filed his nomination papers to contest the Guwahati LS seat and interestingly the NCP is contesting the election under the party banner bearing the picture of AUDF leader Baduruddin Ajmal.

It may be recalled that AUDF, CPI, CPM and BPPF had constituted the Third Front with a view to defeating the Congress and in a meeting held not too long ago, the TF members had decided that the Guwahati seat be given to a NCP candidate. And now that NCP candidate Rajkhowa too has submitted his nomination papers there appears to have emerged a split within the TF.

These recent developments–firstly, the split in the Congress minority vote bank followed by the division that has emerged within the TF and NCP’s slim chances of winning given the fact that the majority of the voters are congress supporters–have greatly worked to BJP candidate Bijoya Chakravarty’s advantage.

Only time will tell whether or not she succeeds in winning the prestigious Guwahati seat. THE SENTINEL
