GUWAHATI, April 18: The recent comments of AUDF leader Baduruddin Ajmal’s son on the traditional attire of the Asomiya people has drawn a lot of flak from all sections of the Asomiya society and has literally stirred up a hornet’s nest.
Baduruddin’s son who had been campaigning for his father said at a public meeting held recently that the lungi and the topi (skull cap) constituted the national attire of the Asomiya community. His remark drew a great outcry from various groups and organizations in the State. The Asom Satra Mahasabha’s youth body Swaminatta Yuvatirtha (SY) general secretary Dibyajyoti Saikia said that the comments made by the AUDF leader’s son was in bad taste and tantamounted to an affront on the tradition and culture of the Asomiya community not to speak of the sentiments of the people of the State. He said that a person who was not even conversant in the Asomiya language and who had not the foggiest idea of Asomiya culture and tradition should desist from making such indelicate remarks.
Reacting to the public outcry over the remarks, the AUDF maintained that the remarks made by Ajmal’s son had nothing to with the political orientation and ideology of the party and as such the comments were purely individualistic in nature.
Saikia, however, said that people who made such remarks were by no means deserving of forgiveness as such remarks only contributed towards fomenting disharmony and communalism among the people at large.
Significantly, the SY has issued a stern warning to all political parties and candidates not to indulge in making such derogatory remarks at the expense of the Asomiya community in future. THE SENTINEL
