GUWAHATI, March 5: Even though the Asom Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has finalized its candidates for six Lok Sabha constituencies of the State, the party is yet to decide on the remaining seven constituencies.
On the other hand, three sitting MPs vying for a party ticket are facing a tough challenge from the other ticket aspirants. The three sitting MPs are Guwahati MP Kirip Chaliha, Tezpur MP Mani Kumar Subba and Dhubri MP Anwar Hussain.
A meeting of the AICC screening committee, which was based on the panels forwarded by the APCC election committee, was held in New Delhi yesterday night. The meeting, which was chaired by Union Minister Parnab Mukherjee, saw the presence of AICC leaders Oscar Fernandez and Veerappa Moily, Asom Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and APCC chief Bhubaneswar Kalita.
The AICC screening committee has prepared two and three-name panels for the seven undecided Lok Sabha constituencies of the State. The names forwarded by the AICC screening committee are Rani Narah, Bobeeta Sharma and Amiya Kumar Bhuyan (Lakhimpur), Anil Raja, Nazneen Farooqi and Bishnu Prasad (Nagaon), Rajiv Sarma, Madhav Rajbangshi and Dijen Sarma (Mangoldoi), Robin Bordoloi, Dr. Haren Das and Kirip Chaliha (Guwahati), Wajed Ali Choudhury, Abdul Hamid and Anwar Hussain (Dhubri), Mani Kumar Subba and Hiranya Bora (Tezpur) and Ismail Hussain and Mujamil Hussain (Barpeta).
The two-member panels prepared by the screening committee would now be placed before the AICC chief election committee, which would make the final decision based on Sonia Gandhi’s approval. The CEC may even select ticket aspirants whose names are not included in the panels put forward to them.
The APCC has already finalized the single-name panels for six Lok Sabha constituencies of the State. THE SENTINEL
