Fight to finish

The Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapakse has announced after the capture of LTTE’s political and administrative Headquarter at Kilinochchi for the first time in a decade that his government would continue the fight against the LTTE until the final act of the false Eelam struggle was played to its finish. The Sri Lankan Army has won victory after victory and the countdown to extinction of the LTTE had begun. The capture of Elephant Pass at the entrance of Jaffna peninsula was another landmark victory. The LTTE is now confined to the thick jungles in Mallathivu district–their last stronghold which would fall any day. The well fortified bunker used by LTTE supremo Prabhakaran was found empty and the Sri-Lankan army believed that Prabhakaran had fled from Sri-Lanka.The LTTE adopted scorched earth policy while retreating from their political and administrative Headquarter Kilinochchi as the Sri Lankan army found the town completely deserted with water supply system completely destroyed. The civilian population numbering about a lakh had disappeared along with the LTTE leaders and cadres.

The Sri-Lankan Government has now banned the LTTE on the ground that it had been holding civilians as human shield in the north where the military was engaged in war with the Tigers. The LTTE is banned in 32 countries across the globe including India, United States, United Kingdom and the European Union. The Sri-Lankan President has asked the Sri Lankan army to strictly follow Zero-Civilian Casualty policy and declared Safe Zone for civilians where the advancing army would not resort to firing. More than 2,50,000 civilians are trapped and the International Committee on Red Cross had complained that due to security reasons they found it difficult to provide medical assistance to the civilians trapped by the LTTE.The basic need of the trapped civilians such as food and medical assistance should be provided and their safety and security ensured.Prabhakaran is on the most wanted list of the Government of India for his involvement in the killing of India’s young and dynamic Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.1f he is captured alive India would like him to be handed over to face the consequences of his dastardly crime. President Rajapakse has shown his determination to fight terrorism to the finish.
