Safety norms for Durga Puja in Siliguri

Fire dept issues safety norms ahead of Pujas

SILIGURI, Sept. 30: The Siliguri Fire Station has taken some steps to avert fire-related accidents during Durga puja. “Though no accident has happened in the past five years during the festival days wedo not want to take the matter lightly,” the divisional officer, Siliguri Fire Station, Mr Tapan Kumar Ghosh said.

“We have had a meeting with the police officers in this regard a few days back and steps are being taken as preventive measures to keep off any accident,” he said.

Dwelling upon the measures Mr Ghosh said that the Puja committees had been asked to comply with some rules as far as the construction of community pandals were concerned. “Coir rope and if possible, iron wire should be used instead of the highly combustible worn -out cloths,” the fire official said. Mr Ghosh further said that the fire department had asked the puja organisers to widen the exit and entry points by a few feet. “The height of the pandals should not be over 40 feet and fire extinguishers and two drums of water should be provided near the main electric box,” he added.

The officer in-charge Mr Sukumar Ghosh said that a collective team comprising senior officials of the district administration, police department and fire station would visit several pandals in the town any time in the midst of the festivities to inspect whether the puja committees complied with the instructions or not. “We might cancel permission next year in case of non-compliance of the instructions,” he added. n SNS
