Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navanirman Sena was ultimately arrested under intense pressure from the Central government, sent to jail and released on bail the next day. His followers went on a rampage in different parts of Mumbai damaging buses, trains, shops, taxis resulting in death of three persons. Earlier MNS activists attacked the North Indian candidates appearing in examination conducted by the Railways disrupting examinations in several places and injuring several candidates. One of the candidates from Bihar succumbed to the injuries and when his dead body arrived in Patna the dejected candidates bent on taking revenge, set fire to trains on way to Maharashtra, blocked National High Way and violence was spreading rapidly to different parts of Bihar. The Railway Minister has announced compensation to the family of the dead candidate and a fresh examination to be held for those candidates who could not appear in the examinations in Mumbai to be held outside Maharashtra. The Lok Sabha discussed the matter and expressed its grave concern at the hooliganism perpetrated by Raj Thackeray and his followers and demanded that the culprits should be brought to book. After three advisories from the Central government and criticism in Lok Sabha, the Vilas Rao Deshmukh government of Maharashtra belatedly decided to act and arrested Raj Thackeray.
Since he left his original party Shiv Sena, Raj Thackeray hijacked the Shiv Sena’s core philosophy of Marathi manus to strengthen his new party Maharashtra Navaninrman Sena and targeted the North Indians. This is not the first time that candidates coming from outside to appear in the railway examination had these humiliating experience. The MNS hooligans attacked North Indians arriving in Mumbai to take Railway Board examination earlier also and the State government failed to provide security to the examinees.Raj Thackeray criticised Amitabh Bachchan for showing bias towards UP as brand ambassador. He extracted a public apology from Jaya Bachchan for her indiscreet remark about speaking in Hindi. He threatened the North Indians for celebrating Chat Puja. His followers damaged sign boards for not writing in Marathi language. Thus the MNS supremo’s diktats were ruthlessly implemented by his goons while the State machinery remained silent onlookers. The Congress-NCP government allowed the MNS to grow into a formidable party eclipsing the Shiv Sena for their own political advantage. The electronic media made Raj Thackeray grow into a hero from zero. But enough is enough and the State government must stop the menace of MNS and maintain law and order at all cost. All sections of the people must feel safe and secure in Mumbai. Mumbai belongs to all Indians. source:assam tribune
