PCB issues pollution control steps for puja’s

GUWAHATI, Oct 5: To lessen the environmental pollution during the puja’s, the Pollution Control Board (PCB), Assam has issued directives to all the district administration in the State vide letter No. WB/G-581/07-08/57 dated Oct 1, 2008.
The PCB directive has asked the puja committees to avoid the use of thermo coal paper for decoration and idol-making. For distribution of prasad, the PCB has directed the use of eco-friendly paper plates, banana leaf, shal leafs or clay plates.
On the sound pollution front, the PCB directive asks the puja committees not to play music systems before 8 am and after 10 pm. Further, in the remaining part of the day, music must be played within permissible limits. Mounted loud speakers are prohibited from 10 pm-8 am.
The PCB has taken serious notice of pollution caused to the Brahmaputra due to immersion of idols. The PCB said that it has asked the puja organizers to dispose off the idols from the riverbed after 24 hours of its immersion. The district administration has arranged for designated immersion ghats to avoid overcrowding and localization of water pollution. If necessary, immersion ceremony mat be spread over 2 days to avoid pollution of water bodies.
The PCB suggested the setting up of a coordination committee comprising of district administration officials, municipal officers, police and NGOs to guide the puja committees in the immersion of idols with minimal adverse effect on environment.
The PCB will see to that waste bins are placed at strategic points and to keep vehicles away from the puja mandaps as far as practicable. The board has also asked the puja committees to arrange for suitable drinking water which is clean and disinfected.
To measure the environmental status, the PCB will organize a noise level monitoring, ambient air quality monitoring and collect the water samples during and after the immersion of the puja idols. sourcE: sentinel assam
