The term “Navratri” is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “nine nights.” It is during this period that sees the worship of the female goddess’ particularly Durga or Kali (Goddess of Power), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and Sarsawati (Goddess of wisdom), and their various avatars. The tenth day culminates into Dussera – the day Ram emerged victorious over Ravana.

Rituals:
“Bommai Kolu” or dolls in various costumes are specially and carefully arranged on steps, and are adorned with flowers and ornaments at one’s homes. Floors are market with intricate rangoli designs while doors are adorned with mango leaves.These dolls typically represent goddess’, village-life and weddings. While nine young pre-pubescent girls are treated to new clothes and sweets, and married women treat themselves to flowers, and a snack known as sundal usli – a concoction of various boiled and roasted pulses mixed with coconut.
Music & Dance:
Dandiya has become a popular event here in the city with many looking forward to shake a leg. Several association, too, are gearing up for the upcoming festivities.
