The Hindu Bengali community meets Mississippi this weekend, as the Durga Puja festival makes its first appearance in the Magnolia State.
Santanu Banerjee, the vice president of the Indian Association of Mississippi, compares the event to the Christmas celebration of Christians.Banerjee said in an event release that the celebration’s history is based on the belief that “evil had become too powerful in the earth and all the different representations of god together created a feminine representation of power (and) energy to defeat the evil and restore peace on this earth.”The festival will be held on the Tougaloo College campus. No entrance fee required, but donations will be accepted. For event schedules and other information, go to http://sites.google.com/site/msdurgapujo/ online.
