Durga Pujas in Bangalore, Karnataka

The Pujas of the Bengali Association is into its 59th year. And Bangalore is also in full form to celebrate this Bengali festival. People scattered all over the city come together to exchange notes and enjoy the few careless moments.
MY ASSOCIATION with the city of Bangalore goes back to the late seventies when I had first arrived here for an interview. I was one of the disappointed candidates but, subsequently, I have visited this wonderful city on and off on official duty and several times for personal activities. This was usually to use this as a stop over to proceed to Tirupathi for a darshan of Lord Balaji. Anyway, my visit this time around was to meet up with my son and his family who are residents of Bangalore – the world is certainly a small place.

Fortunately it is the festive season and while there are Durga pujas held in and around the city by the local Bengalis, we had to content ourselves with the round-the-clock coverage of the pujas of Kolkata. Thanks to the reach of TV, it is not difficult to try and be one with the revelers even though we miss out on the direct one-to–one interaction.

The pujas of the Bengali Association is into its 59th year. Held in the grounds of the RBANMS grounds, its programmes this year begin from October 5, with dance ballets by destitute children under the auspices of an non-government organisation (NGO). The next day is for Kathak and Odissi dances.
On the 7th, there will be Dona Ganguli, the wife of cricketer Sourav Ganguli with her performance. And finally, on the 8th there would be the Bengali rock band Dhoomketu at the centre stage.

In Koramangala, it was the Sarathi Socio Cultural Trust who conducts the Durga pujas – the inauguration function was ‘Rupasi Bangla’, a performance by children. Rabindra Sangeet by members followed with offerings by Krosswindz, a rock band known for their contemporary folk music.

A third location was in Brooke Fields – here it was the Poorva Bangalore Association. They had roped in the noted movie and stage actor Soumitra Chatterjee who recited some of his favourite poems. Another location was in JP Nagar where the South Bangaloire Cultural Association had their programmes.

All in all, it was festive mood everywhere and Bengalis who are compelled to reside in far away places assemble on these occasions to exchange notes and enjoy the few careless moments.
