Durga Puja Tokyo Japan

Bengali Association of Tokyo, Japan

Link between Japan and eastern part of modern India is more than 1500 years old. It goes back to 6th century AD when Buddhism reached Japan. In modern days, we can remember the visit of Swami Vivekananda on his way to Chicago, Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore's love towards Japanese art and culture, freedom fighters like Ras Behari Bose, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and after the war judge Radha Binod Pal. Specially we have noticed Japanese related to Imperial Army still remembers Netaji and little older generation tells us how much they have respect for judge Pal. They feel he has saved life of lot of their relatives and friends after the war from Americans.

Also there are lot of Indo-Nippon Associations. The oldest one is celebrating 100 years this year. The Bengal connection is mostly through Rabindranath and Shantiniketan. We are thankful to lot of Japanese scholars, specially Azuma-sensei (winner of Deshikottam award) , Nara- Sensei ( now creating a Japanese, English and Indian language dictionary) , etc.

We Bengalis in Japan are a very small community, specially from Indian part of Bengal. We are engaged in Business, Education, Engineering, Consultancy, Finance, Insurance and Banking Industry etc. Also today due to IT revolutions in India, we have lot of young members with high intellectual background. Due to strong cultural relationship between Bengal & Japan, we have also lot of artists here spreading Indian Art and also making their living.

So, we are an informal, family type of organization. Our Durga Puja in Tokyo is already 18 years old. First Saraswati Puja was celebrated a quarter century back. Our Literary Puja Magazine " Anjali" publishes articles in four languages- Japanese, Bangla, Hindi and English. We celebrate "Poila Boisakh", "Basanta Utsav", etc. We also participate in various activities organized by Indian Community in Tokyo and also Indian Embassy in Japan, like Sakura Bazaar (Cherry Blossom festival), Diwali, Namaste India (jointly organized by India Tourism and Indo-Japan Association), etc.
