Police gear up for Puja security

SILIGURI, Oct. 1: In a bid to maintain proper law and order during the upcoming Durga Pujas, the state administration has sanctioned six companies of additional police force for north Bengal.
According to the IGP, north Bengal Mr KL Tamta, additional troops would be deployed in equal strength in the six districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur and Malda. The deployment would be in place till the festive season concludes.
Keeping in mind the recent blasts in a number of cities and towns across the country, police are giving special attention to Siliguri.
“The district police will setup 31 Police Assistance Booth (PAB) across Siliguri town to regulate the huge crowd and traffic movements during the Durga Pujas. All the PABs will come up at major road junctions, market places and Puja pandals would be equipped with dedicated telephones and conveyance,” the IGP said.
The PABs will start functioning from the very first day of the Pujas, i.e. from Saptami. A dedicated Childcare Help Line with the mobile number # 97334-11919 will also be functioning round the clock.
Besides this the police are also roping in volunteers for regulating crowds at the concerned Puja Pandals in the town, the IGP said.
Mr Tamta today released two separate Puja guide maps for the Siliguri-Pradhannagar and Bhaktinagar police station areas, incorporating in them the traffic restrictions during the Pujas, location and phone number of the proposed Police Assistance Booths, fire services, medical assistance etc. source: the statesman
