Durga Puja in Raiganj

A Puja to crack down on criminals?
Statesman News Service RAIGANJ, Oct. 7: If Durga puja signifies the victory of good over evil; here is one Puja is truest to the spirit. Ask the women organisers of the ‘Debinagar Gayalal School Pally Mahila Samity’ why they decided to organise Durga puja this year and you would be surprised. No fun and frolic here, sheer necessity has prompted these women to organise the Puja, as a measure of security. This is how the story goes! The locality is about a kilometer away from Raiganj town and is slightly secluded. The degree of isolation increases during the Pujas when the men folk of the area go to Raiganj along with friends and relatives to savour the Puja. It is then that the criminals swoop down.“Taking advantage of the situation during the Puja days, the criminals get bold and raid this area. Under the circumstances, the women of the area decided to organise a puja all by themselves to ensure the presence of lots of people in the area and end the criminals’ activities. The idea has paid off,” said Mrs Nandini Dhar a committee member. The puja, being held for the first time, is understandably a small budget one, propped by local subscription. But it has served its purpose. Unlike other years, no crime has been reported in the first two days of the puja so far and the people have breathed a sigh of relief. And oh yes, the men folk have stuck to their homes too! source: the statesman
