From our Staff Reporter
DIBRUGARH, Oct 4: Dibrugarh is all set to celebrate Durga Puja with the usual pomp and splendour.
Police sources here said that 54 puja pandals have come up in the town while the number in the area under Sadar police station stands at 88. When The Sentinel had talked with the committee members of various puja celebrations in the town, it was learned to what extent they were going to outdo each other.

The Jhalukpara Durga Puja is bound to be a crowd puller as the pandal is in the shape of a ship. Two groups from Kolkata have taken up the job of building the pandal and doing the lighting, which has cost Rs 4 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh respectively. Committee members revealed that the total budget for this 51-year old Durga Puja celebration was Rs 8 lakh. Five dhakis from Cooch Behar have been paid Rs 10,000 to beat the drums during the days of the puja.

Workers from West Bengal have been working day in and day out for days to complete the train and train station shaped pandal of Mitra Sangha Durga Puja. They have been well paid for it, Rs 3.5 lakh to be exact. The committee has paid Rs 1 lakh to another contractor to oversee the lighting. It has spent Rs 7 lakh to ensure that the celebration, which has entered its 28th year, is the grist of conversation for days to come.

The Marwaripatty Durga Puja, which was first celebrated in 1945, has cost its committee members Rs 5 lakh. The façade of the pandal has elaborate designs made of sugla leaves, madhur pati and bamboo. Dry flowers have been also used. The money paid to the workers from 24 Parganas is Rs 2.25 lakh. The lighting has cost Rs 80,000 while Rs 6,000 has gone to pay the group of dhakis from Cooch Behar.

The Jyoti Nagar Durga Puja committee set the budget for this year’s celebration at Rs 5 lakh of which Rs 2 lakh has gone to the pandal contractor. The money spent on lighting is minimal since the lights belong to the organizing committee. A committee member revealed that there are patrons who take up the responsibility of paying for something or the other, like the idol and offerings, needed during the puja days. He also said that a children’s programme will be held on the evening of Sasthi. Meanwhile, women were up throughout the night yesterday, two days before the puja starts in earnest, making mehendi patterns on the palms and feet of the various figures on the pedestal.

The Chiring Chapori Durga Puja pandal has cost its committee just Rs 85,000. Rs 40,000 has gone to light it up. The total budget stands at Rs 1.8 lakh. This puja has entered its 15th year of celebration, which will resound with the drum beats made by dhakis from Cooch Behar during the puja days. These drummers were paid Rs 12,000 to perform the task.

The money spent by the organizers of the Durga Puja at India Club seems meager in comparison to the figures quoted by other celebration committees. Rs 1 lakh has been spent for the celebration that is more than a century old. source: sentinel assam
