Shillong: With reports of communal clashes involving Muslims and tribals in Udalgiri and Darrang districts of Assam, KVIB Chairman Pynshai M Syiem has warned that 'silent invasion' of foreigners into the State would erode the social, economic and policital security of the State besides indirectly affecting the demographic structure of indigenous people of the State.
In a letter to Chief Minister Donkupar Roy here on Sunday, Mr Syiem said "it is high time that the Government should hurriedly take into consideration the acts passed by the Government of India and intervention from all concerned."
"The indigenous people of Meghalaya in particular should take immediate action to stop the 'silent invasion' into the State," he added.
He has also urged the Chief Minister to implement the Illegal Migrant Determination Act to detect foreigners' presence in the State and the Election Department to take immediate steps to check enrolment of foreigners into the electoral rolls.
The Jaintia Youth Federation, Eastern Jaintia Hills also echoed similar views.
In a statement issued here, the Federation said presence of infiltration check gates, check posts bear no meaning at all as migrant labourers continued to arrive unchecked into the State, especially in Khliehriat Sub-Division of Jaintia Hills district, which poses serious threat to the indigenous people," the statement pointed. source: the shillong times
