5 more killed in fresh violence

GUWAHATI, Oct 5 – Despite deployment of the Army and additional police and Central paramilitary forces, the situation in the trouble-torn Udalguri and Darrang districts is yet to be brought under control and the death toll has increased to more than 35 till date including those killed in police firing. Police sources admitted here today that at least five persons were killed in Dimakuchi village under Paneri police station today, while at least four persons were killed in police firing in different parts of the affected districts. Polices said that incidents of arson and setting ablaze of houses were also reported from different parts of the districts, while rumours also created panic among the people.

It may be mentioned here that after reviewing security measures in a meeting with senior officials of Police and administration, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is also in charge of the Home department said last afternoon that the situation was under control, but subsequent events proved that his information was not correct.

Our Correspondents report: Mangaldoi: Fresh incidents of violence have been reported from different parts of Darrang and Udalguri districts today despite presence of Army and police and at least seven persons were killed in police firing. An indefinite curfew is on in the affected places.

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this evening that shoot-at-sight orders have been issued to bring the situation under control. He said that around 32,000 people are taking shelter in relief camps in Udalguri district and around 26,000 in Darrang district. He informed that of the persons injured in the clashes, 46 have been sent to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital for treatment, while 61 have been admitted in the Mangaldoi civil hospital and five are undergoing treatment in Tezpur.

More than 400 trucks stranded on the National Highway were allowed to proceed to their respective destinations with security cover.

Udalguri: The situation in Udalguri and parts of Darrang district is yet to be brought under control even as the security personnel are patrolling the affected areas. There is a confusion about the death toll in the district as the new Superintendent of Police of the district has claimed that 17 persons lost their lives including nine killed in police firing, while according to unofficial reports, more than 25 persons lost their lives.

People from the affected areas are still pouring in to the district headquarters and Army personnel are patrolling the affected places. However, even patrolling by the forces could not prevent occurrence of fresh incidents of violence. The exact number of people living in the relief camps is yet to be ascertained as the number is increasing every hour.

A joint delegation of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) today visited some of the affected areas of the district and alleged that the Government failed to take adequate steps to deal with the situation.

Addressing a press conference, the leaders of AASU and ABSU said that according to their information, more than 85,000 displaced people are still living in 38 relief camps. “It is unfortunate that the indigenous people of Assam are forced to leave their own homes to take shelter in relief camps,” they said.

AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya expressed shock over the fact that flag of Pakistan was hoisted in the soil of Assam. He alleged that the Government failed to nab the culprits involved in the incidents even after 48 hours.

A team of the State unit of the BJP headed by its president Ramen Deka today visited some of the affected areas of the district and demanded a judicial probe into the clashes.

Kalaigaon: Though no major incident was reported last night, fresh incidents occurred this morning with miscreants burning down several houses in the Bodo and Garo-inhabited Punia and Wahpara villages today, Meanwhile, Army arrested two Bodo youths for attempting to set fire houses.

Tezpur: Security measures in Sonitpur district have been tightened to prevent spreading of violence to the district. Officials of the district administration and police visited the vulnerable places of the district to instil confidence in the minds of the people and also to review the security measures.

Different organizations of the district including the students organizations have appealed to all sections of people to maintain peace.

Tangla: The on-going violence today spread to fresh areas in Udalguri district and at least five persons were killed at Dimakuchi and more houses were reported to have been burnt down.

According to information, in the weekly market of Dimakuchi, five persons were killed by a group of miscreants today around noon while another person was seriously injured. The four of the deceased have been identified as Rafimuddin Ahmed (50) of 2 No. Sonajuli, Ajijur Rahman (45) of Katanibasti, Anwar Hussain (62) of Katanibasti, Sirajuddin Ahmed (55) of Sirajuli. The remaining one is yet to be identified. One Bulbul Ali (60) sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Mangaldai civil hospital. It needs mention that the weekly market is just near the Dimakuchi police station. Meanwhile, Army and CRPF patrolling in the area is going on and no untoward incident has been reported from this area so far.

Kokrajhar: Dr Kameswar Brahma, president of Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), today blamed Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who also holds the Home portfolio for his failure to visit the violence-hit areas personally along with a strong delegation to assess the situation and demanded a high-level inquiry, exgratia, medical treatment and relief facility to the affected people.

The BSS has also appealed to the people not to panic due to rumours and misinformation. On the other hand he also appealed for a united effort by all in the society to restore peace and harmony.
