Towards a cleaner Durga Puja

Statesman News Service
JALPAIGURI, Sept. 26: The Jalpaiguri Municipality is taking several initiatives to keep the town clean during Durga Puja.

“Plastic is widely used during the pujas which pollute the enviornment. The fast food stalls, tea-sellers, temporary stationary shops etc. in and around the various Puja Pandals add to the problem. So this year we would consider these things vital while judging the Pujas of Jalpaiguri,” said the Jalpaiguri Municipality chairman Mr Mohan Bose.

Prizes would be given for best illumination, best pandal and best idol. Pandals who maintain cleanliness would also be awarded. “Seventy-five people have been employed to keep clean all the 25 wards of the town before and after the Pujas,” said Mr Bose.

The civic body has also taken the initiative to lighten the streets of the town. “Rs 10,000 would be spend for each ward so that the people find it easier to walk at night. We have already started working on this project so as to prevent any kind of inconvenience during Durga Puja,” the chairman added.

Mr Bose said that because of the limited number of immersion ghats people as well as the puja organisers face problem every year. To solve the problem we have increased the number of ghats to seven this year. The municipality has also made provisions for removing garbage.
