— Dr D C Mahanta
If somebody asks me– “who is the most influential person in your life”– without any hesitation, I would proudly reply that – he is my teacher! It is a universal truth that a sincere, dedicated and a good teacher is definitely the most influential and respected person in one’s life. A good teacher always shows the children the right path and tries to nip in the bud all the evils which would otherwise have taken root in them. Parent gives birth to a child and brings him/her up but a teacher makes him/her good human being. It has been observed that children are more obedient and listen more to their teachers than their parents. Therefore the role and responsibility of a teacher is best expressed in the Jesuit dictum, “Give me a boy, I will give you a man and a citizen of his country”. Teachers show the way to righteousness to the students to become good citizens of a country.
A person is definitely fortunate enough if he meets good teachers in his career. A good teacher is a gift of God to the society. In the days of decadence of our academic scenario there are still great teachers in the society we can look up to and regain pristine glory to academic life. But in many instances a large number of teachers of the present day has commercialised the teaching profession. In the past, even in the last few decades, teaching profession was considered to be service to the children of God. But now– a– days it is taken up as money-making profession. Many of the teachers sell their service and talents too just as some other professionals do.
Teaching is a noble profession. A good teacher is honoured everywhere while a king is respected only in his own kingdom. Becoming a “teacher” is not easy because he or she is expected to be a fountain-head of knowledge. One can’t take classes successfully unless he or she has mastered the subject. The most important factor of deteriorating phase of our present academic environment is haphazard appointment of teachers– some of who may not be qualified or fit for such responsible job. There are also extreme political influences on appointment of teachers especially in government academic institutions where talent and merit are relegated to the back seat. Allegations are galore of teachers’ posts becoming bargaining point at the corridors of power overlooking the requisite qualifications and norms.
Education being the one and only important component of any developed society it should play a vital role in shaping our life. But there has been a phenomenal change in the present academic environment, both in colleges and in schools, and the main aim of education has undergone a radical change these days. Instead of contributing to the over all development of a child at primary level or a student at higher level, education is now towards equipping a child to fit well with a consumerist and competitive society. Hence it is not surprising that teachers do not care to look beyond the syllabi, tend to concentrate on the students who are doing private tuition under him or her.
To regain the past glory of education the teachers who are engaged in private tutorial homes should realize the responsibility of their teaching job entrusted to them. They should also realise that the name and fame that can be achieved by being a perfect teacher is superior to earning extra-money from private tuition. They should take personal care to each and every student, especially in the schools, and adapt their teaching methods to the special needs of individual student. They also should keep themselves updated.
Allegations are made from all the sections that there is no analytical way of teaching by many of the present day teachers. They incorrectly and un-systematically finish off the syllabus allotted to them because either they have not mastered the subject or those who are engaged in tuitions, keep it a little unfinished, so that the students have to approach them for private tuition. As such, students dislike these teachers and they even can not pay attention in the class because of the poor quality of teaching. Needless to say, those teachers who are engaged in private tuition, never go deep into the subject in the class teaching. And tutorial homes are the places where no one can exhibit quality teaching.
We should give credit where it is due. Though many teachers have turned out to be exploiters of their profession, there is no dearth of knowledgeable ones who are still worth worshiping! They join temple of learning with strong and consistent academic background, conceptual clarity and balanced approach, aiming at hybridisation of mind where the flowers that will radiate can take root. It is a mission for them. They know that to be a good teacher lot of home work to be done to impress upon the students by teaching them in a methodical and analytical way. Such teachers leave indelible impression on the minds of the students. Their classes are jam-packed with students paying full attention and show proper respect as they deserve. These teachers teach the subject in such a manner that it becomes the most interesting subject for one and all. These teachers are taken as a role model for one’s life and sources of immense satisfaction.
