Ethnic groups for ’66 voters list

Spl correspondent
NEW DELHI, Sept 22 – Assam Government’s proposal to update the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) on basis of Electoral Rolls of 1971, has run into stiff opposition. Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM) has demanded update of NRC of 1951 on the basis of 1966 voter’s list. A delegation of ASM, a conglomeration of over 15 bodies and indigenous ethnic communities, today staged a sit-in-demonstration pressing for solution of four-point charter of demands. The organisation includes, Mising Sahitya Sabha, Tiwa Sahitya Sabha, Koch Rajbongshi Sahitya Sabha, Karbi Cultural Society, All Assam Matak Sanmilan, All Rabha Council, Deuri Sangram Samity, among others.

The demands include acceptance of the Electoral rolls in 1952 and foiling of the alleged conspiracy to include lakhs of illegal foreigners in the NRC by eliminating the existence of indigenous people.

Working president of the ASM told newsmen that they are opposing the draft modalities submitted by the Assam Government to the Ministry of Home Affairs and were demanding repeal of the modalities.

The reasons behind demanding the upgrade of the NRC on the basis of Rolls of 1966 is that by 1965 the people of East Pakistan had started their struggle against West Pakistan. The human right repressions on East Pakistani led to mass exodus into Assam. source: assam tribune
