BENGALURU, Sept 13 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alongwith Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is planning to step up pressure on the Central to act against the illegal Bangladeshi migrants. Under pressure from the North Eastern State units, BJP national president, Rajnath Singh is likely to ask the BJP-ruled States to crack the whip on the illegal infiltrators by starting to detect the Bangladeshi migrants. Singh is expected to make an announcement to this affect shortly.
The BJP central leadership was compelled to take drastic action on this front, after North Eastern State units including Assam and Arunachal Pradesh made interventions seeking immediate action plan. BJP Arunachal Pradesh MP, Kiren Rijiju and Assam State unit president, Ramen Deka together raised the issue.
The mood of the BJP members perhaps prompted Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi to make a special intervention during the discussion on the political resolution. He said that the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh continue to invade India.
The Government of India and the UPA don’t perceive these illegal immigrants as a threat to the sovereignty and demography of India. “They prefer to use these immigrants as a vote bank,” Modi said.
Continuing, he said the Supreme Court quashed both the IM(DT) Act and the Foreigners Control (Amendment) Order, since they were intended to make detection of foreigners’ impossible. “The UPA failed to introduce a proper mechanism for foreigners’ detection,” the Gujarat Chief Minister said.
Raising the issue, Rijiju said it is time that illegal migrants coming to India from Bangladesh should be considered a threat to the country’s security. Everyone knows that BJP is against illegal migration, now it is time to show some action on the ground. The BJP must devise a strategy now before it comes to power at the Centre, he suggested.
“We should not wait for the elections to work out an action plan,” he told this newspaper later.
He said he suggested that a high level committee be constituted to device a strategy.
Later, BJP Assam president, Ramen Deka said that he has been given to understand that the national president may make some important announcement in this regard like asking the BJP-ruled States to start the detection process.
He said that he briefed the national leadership that despite the Supreme Court striking down the IM (DT) Act, the Congress-ruled Central and State Governments have nothing to detect the illegal migrants, an issue that has again assumed the political centre-stage. He urged the central leaders to make the issue a part of the Party’s main agenda.
Deka also dwelt about the growth of the Islamic fundamentalist groups in Assam with strong jehadi links across the border.
Yesterday, during a session on reports from the States, Deka briefed the Central leadership about the prevailing political scenario of the State and the activities of the State unit. He appraised the leaders about the ‘Sajagota Divas’ organised by the State unit against illegal migration.
He said that Party has now started engaging itself in relief work in the flood affected areas of the State. Deka said he had earlier submitted a detailed note on the flood situation.
