IMPHAL, July 13 – The symbolic cremation of Thangjam Manorama, who was allegedly raped and murdered by Assam Rifles personnel four years ago, was performed at interior Bamon Kampu village in Manipur’s Imphal East district. Khumanleima, Manorama’s mother, who had earlier declined to hold the last rites until action is taken against the guilty, changed her mind and held her last rites on July 11 after having a dream. According to Khumanleima, Manorama came in her dreams and told her that “she was very tired and hungry”.After consulting other locals, the elderly mother held her last rites and symbolically cremated her in the presence of villagers.According to sources, around a hundred persons wearing traditional costumes attended the cremation and offered flowers at Manorama’s photograph. Manorama was arrested on July 10, 2004 for her alleged links with the militants. Her body was found the following day and the incident sparked public outcry demanding action against the Assam Rifles personnels involved and scrapping of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (1958). However, no action have been taken against Assam Rifles personnel yet since Union Home Ministry has not issued an order for the same. As per the provisions of the AFSPA (1958), permission has to be obtained from the Union Home Ministry for taking action against any personnel posted in “disturbed areas” of Manipur. – PTI source: assam tribune
