From our Correspondent JORHAT, June 30: A warm send-off was accorded to a 12-member cultural troupe from Majuli to the shores of France. The troupe from Uttar Kamalabari Xatra will perform classical Xatriya dance and other cultural items like Gayan Bayan, Paalnaam, Borgeet etc in 16 places in France from July 3. Xatradhikar of Uttar Kamalabari Xatra Janardan Debo Goswami said while sending off the troupe that it was a historic moment for Majuli as a Xatriya troupe from this island had never visited a foreign country after 1975. “When Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the President, he arranged the tour of a cultural troupe from Majuli to a couple of Asian countries in 1975,” the Xatradhikar said. This time, a French NGO, Preserver Majuli, has made all the arrangements. It was in 1998 that Nadine Depet had visited Majuli from France and was enamoured by the people and the rich cultural heritage here. Back in France, she formed the Preserver Majuli to help Majulians and organize cultural exchange programmes. source: sentinel assam
