From Our Spl Correspondent NEW DELHI, June 26 – After delay of nearly a month, the Centre today announced appointment of new Governors for Assam, Meghalaya and Sikkim besides, Kerala and Bihar. A communiqué from Rashtrapati Bhavan said that Shiv Charan Mathur has been appointed as Governor of Assam, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary as Governor of Meghalaya and Balmiki Prasad Singh as Governor of Sikkim. Mathur is likely to take charge on July 4 at Guwahati.There was inter-change of jobs as R.S. Gavai, Governor of Bihar has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Kerala, while R.L. Bhatia has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Bihar for the remainder of his term.Today’s appointment also seals the fate of Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Ajai Singh. He was also looking for renewal of his job, however, the Congress Government did not favour him, as Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi’s government pressed for appointment of a person with political background. Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mathur is a veteran political leader of the State and considered among the party’s most seasoned politicians. He had a long stint as Minister from 1967 to 1977 and Chief Minister for two terms from 1981 to 1985, and 1988 to 1989. He was also member of the 10th Lok Sabha. Besides his wife, he has two daughters and a son.Mathur, who is serving his sixth term in the State Assembly, met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Tuesday and gave his consent for the job.Talking to newsmen in Jaipur, he said Assam was not a new place for him as he had been there several times and has got reasonably good knowledge about geography, history, political situation and natural resources of the State. He said he would play the best possible role in ensuring fast development of the State, which had been gifted by the nature with vast mineral resources and oil reserves.Meanwhile, RS Mooshahary, former DG of the BSF who was serving as the State’s Chief Information Commissioner, resigned from his post yesterday.Meanwhile, another Assam cadre officer, BP Singh, who retired as the Union Home Secretary has been promoted as the Governor.
