Life's beginning— In comparison to other scientific disciplines, psychology, the study of the human mind and beahviours, seems to be somewhat intangible and esoteric to the layman. A doyen of chemistry, for instance, would proffer solid evidence, in the form of incontrovertible laboratory tests, for any novel output of his genius and toil. Mathematics, though mostly beyond the comprehension of ordinary folks, has logical sequences leading from the point of postulate to the point of demonstration of a theory or a theorem. Assumption, in physics can be eminently demonstrated, even Einstein's E= mc2, once presumed to lie in the realm of the abstract, has been by now subjected to credible demonstration. On the other hand psychology as a science, along with its ancillaries such as psychiatry and psycho-analysis, more often than not appear to be too abstract and hypothetical. After all Sigmund Freud had to delve into a world no one before him imagined existed, and even today some doubt does exist. One cannot draw a graph of the psyche or trace a visible course through the subconscious! This perhaps explain, why psychologists are often confused with physics, or why theories are a dime a dozen in this discipline, many of the unsubstantiated kind. The common approach of its proponents appear to be to subject a group of volunteers to a psychological test to prove its veracity, and then go about observing and inferring to their hearts' content. No doubt advances in psychology and psychiatry have helped greatly in maintaining sanity in a glowingly insane world. But it is equally true that this discipline has been lately throwing up many dubious to be taleh postulates that need to be taken with more than a pinch of salt. The latest of these is the contention offered by a group of psychologists that "life begins at forty." Obviously, the exponents are expounding their belief in a metaphoric way, for ever a child nowadays know that life begins in the embryonic stage. What is implied is that, for an individual, the age in question is the most mature and economically stable period, the phase from which he or she can actually live." Such a postulate has as many holes in it as a tea strainer. Life may start at forty for some in affluent environs, but for most it is the waist-line which starts to bulge. The fact that the theory of life starting at forty has emerged from psychologists of the developed world, where life-span, are growing longer and longer, is a gaping hole - for inhabitants in many nations of the developing world, particularly those of Africa, it is death rather than life which begin at forty! source: assam tribune editorial 29.06.08
